Route 1 Project - Weekly Update (7-9-14)

FALMOUTH ROUTE ONE INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT

Construction Update #9, July 8, 2014

The following information reflects what you are likely to see on Route One in Falmouth in the upcoming seven days. Please note that this is a projection based on the best available information at the time that it was sent and is subject to change due to weather and other variables.

WORK HOURS:

For the next seven days, crews are expected to work multiple shifts and hours, including night work. This will include from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays, and 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. during the evenings. Crews are currently scheduled to work overnight all this week, into Saturday.

GENERAL OVERVIEW:

We’re pleased to report that work is progressing on schedule. Slightly more than one-third of the major conduit bank, located on the west side of Route One, is now in place; this run starts near Waldo’s and proceeds up to Clearwater Drive. Several manholes have been placed north of Clearwater Drive. The primary focus this week will be on necessary crossings of Route One. Work for the crossings occurs at night, and does require one-way traffic. You may expect portable lighting in the work zones (see below for details) and overnight flaggers will be on the scene to guide traffic.

Two-way traffic will be restored during daytime operations which will continue during this period on its normal schedule. Daytime work includes placement of bases for lighting, sidewalk grading at the south end of the zone, and some surface projects related to stormwater runoff. Beginning early Thursday morning, weather permitting, you may expect to see paving operations that will re-pave cuts in roadways and driveways. Sidewalk paving may also begin later in the week, starting at the south end of the work zone.

WORK CURRENTLY UNDERWAY:

As of Tuesday, July 8, work is occurring in various locations:

  • Installation of light pole bases continues. This is off the roadway.
  • Grading of sidewalks, starting at Waldo’s and moving north
  • Route One crossings: Five crossings are currently underway. Four of these are utilities crossings, to eventually supply power, data and telephone services to businesses on the east side of Route One. One crossing is an installation to handle stormwater runoff. Each of these crossings requires overnight construction activity. Crossings are backfilled to permit two-way traffic at the end of each overnight shift.

Here’s where the crossings are happening:

  • Utilities crossing between Maine Real Estate and the vicinity of Falmouth Physical Therapy and People’s Bank (currently expected to be complete by Wednesday morning)
  • Utilities crossing between Morong buildings on both sides of Route One (currently expected to be complete by Wednesday morning).
  • Stormwater crossing between the north end of Wendy’s property and Pratt Abbott Cleaners. Currently expected to be complete by Wednesday morning.

WORK YOU MAY SEE IN THE UPCOMING WEEK:

Crossings are scheduled to continue this week as follows:

  • Beginning Wednesday: a utilities crossing between Morong and Allen, Sterling and Lothrop.
  • Beginning Wednesday: a utilities crossing between the Falmouth Inn and TD Bank.
  • Beginning Thursday: a utilities crossing between the area housing Starbucks and Tripquipment across to the shopping center parking lot area.
  • Beginning Friday, a crossing to Fundy Road. This area will be backfilled for the weekend, and work on this crossing should resume next Monday evening, finishing next Tuesday. Fundy Road will require one-way traffic during the overnight hours; flaggers will be on scene.
  • Beginning Thursday and Friday: pre-paving prep and paving work to re-pave road and driveway cuts, and to put the base layer of pavement for sidewalks on the south end of the project (from Waldo’s up past Falmouth Physical Therapy). Work is scheduled to start at 5:00 a.m. to minimize disruption to businesses and traffic.
  • Beginning Monday, July 14, crews expect to begin some drainage work at the shared entrance to Irving and Starbucks, just south of Bucknam Road. This may require use of other entrances to these businesses. Flaggers will be on hand to direct.
  • Beginning July 16, crews plan to install a large drainage structure adjacent to Pratt Abbot. Access to the business will not be impacted.
  • On July 16, duct bank work is expected to resume at Clearwater Drive, continuing north. Crews currently expect to cross the entry to Bernie’s later that week, and cross the Wal-Mart entrance the week following.

Well, it’s closed right now. But on Thursday and Friday of this week, pavement will be applied and the sidewalk will re-open. This is in the vicinity of Falmouth Physical Therapy.

The conduit bank uses a LOT of plastic pipe – 20 miles or so, by the time the project is complete. Excavators dig a trench, then crews carefully install the pipes. A form is built around it, and then the conduits are embedded in concrete before backfilling. You may have noticed manhole structures along the way, too. Once the conduit bank is completed, utility companies will pull their lines through the conduits.
