Speech and Debate are two branches of the same co-curricular activity at Falmouth. Speech and Debate are known for encouraging students to develop excellent communication skills in reading, researching, speaking and listening. Speech and Debate attract different kinds of students (Speech has events that include interpretation, such as the reading of poems and prose, theater pieces, and also the creation and performance of original works. Debate tends to encourage more discussion/argument over issues and themes of the day.) Team members travel around the state on Saturdays to compete with teams from all over Maine. They present pieces or arguments 4-5 times each tournament to adult judges, and receive written feedback on ballots which they use to prepare for the next tournament. Our season ends with a bid to attend national tournaments.
