Animal Control Officer
The Falmouth Police Department, along with the Animal Control officer, responds to well over 100 calls annually for either loose dogs, found dogs or lost dogs. When a dog, or even a cat, is recovered without any identification, it is taken to a shelter where you will be required to provide proof that the animal is yours and pay all costs associated with the shelter.
If you need to report a lost animal please contact Public Safety at 207-781-2300.
Here some friendly reminders on how to be a responsible pet owner, not just for your pet but for your neighbors and the surrounding community.
- Maine state law requires that all dogs and cats get vaccinated against the rabies disease and to get the required booster shots.
- You are also required to register your dog annually with the town.
- Be mindful of the weather. There are requirements and laws regarding keeping your pet outdoors, owning a pet is a year-round, day to day responsibility. If you bring your dog along for a car ride, do not leave it unattended for prolonged periods of time, especially in the warmer months.
- Town of Falmouth has a Nuisance Dog ordinance that addresses barking dogs. Be respectful of the rights of your neighbors.
- The State of Maine does not have a “leash law”, however it does require that dogs be under control at all times, whether by leash or voice commands.
- Should a pet not work out, Falmouth has resources available to you; do not abandon your pet. It is not only illegal, but cruel. Contact the Animal Control Officer for assistance.
