Falmouth Town-Wide Volunteer Fair: Make Your Mark!

The Town of Falmouth, in collaboration with area non-profits, will host a Volunteer Fair on Sunday, November 12, from 1:00 to 3:00pm at the Mason-Motz Activity Center on Middle Road. Representatives from local non-profits, service organizations, and booster clubs will be available to showcase their organizations and highlight their volunteer needs for those interested in getting involved. Organizers chose the fair format because it allows potential volunteers the chance to gain a real understanding of the variety of volunteer work available and the time commitments required. Volunteer duties vary greatly between organizations and the skills, physical abilities, and time commitments of potential volunteers are equally diverse.  The Volunteer Fair, now in its second year, offers both organizations and potential volunteers a chance to determine if the “fit” is beneficial to both the non-profit and the individual.  “Volunteering should be fun,” said Betsy Whitcomb, President of The Falmouth Historical Society, who attended the fair last year and will again this year.  “But there is work to be done too for the organization.  Everybody needs to be happy to make it work.  When a volunteer’s skills and abilities line up with an organization’s needs, it’s amazing what can be accomplished!”

The Fair will showcase volunteer opportunities for all ages. Positions are available for those with physical limitations, who need to sit regularly, or who are looking for more active work. Time commitments also vary from specific events or projects to long term, regularly scheduled help.  The variety of volunteer work showcased at the Fair is also impressive. Opportunities include work that can be done at home such as stuffing envelopes, data entry, making phone calls or baking cookies. Other types of opportunities include scanning documents, data entry, fundraising, marketing and promotions, bottle sorting, board service, gardening or lawn care, hanging fliers, serving or delivering food, research and writing, organizing special events, or serving on a board or committee. Students are strongly encouraged to attend the Fair to learn about volunteer opportunities that will count toward their required community service hours necessary for graduation.

Organizations that will be represented at the Volunteer Fair include: Town of Falmouth, Falmouth Memorial Library, Falmouth300 Planning Committee, Falmouth Lions Club, Falmouth Food Pantry, Falmouth Historical Society, Girl Scouts, and more. Space is still available to organizations wishing to participate. Participation is free. Contact Erin Cadigan at ecadigan@falmouthme.org for more information.
