Route 1 Project - Weekly Update (6-23-15)

FALMOUTH ROUTE ONE INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT

Construction Update #42 – June 23, 2015

The following information reflects the latest available information regarding the Route One Infrastructure Project in Falmouth. Please note that forward-looking information is based upon projections and is subject to change due to weather and other variables.

WORK HOURS:

Work in the Route One Infrastructure Project zone for the remainder of this week will begin at approximately 6:00 a.m. and last until approximately 4:30 p.m.  Night work involving utilities cutovers to individual businesses and some cutover work may occur on weekend evenings. Cutover work will be scheduled directly between utilities contractors and the businesses themselves.

GENERAL OVERVIEW:

Things are happening fast now. Utilities cutovers are under way, with most major cutovers expected to be completed in the next two weeks.

Once the utility cutovers are complete, you’ll start to see a stunning change along the Route One corridor: the removal of overhead utilities. From just south of F.O. Bailey’s to north of the Irving car wash, the wires and poles will be removed.

CMP has tentatively scheduled the week of July 6 to complete its cutovers and begin pulling down its aerial infrastructure. Fairpoint is aiming to complete its cutovers by the end of next week and has already removed some of its cabling along the corridor.

Here’s something else likely to occur during the week of July 6: milling of the roadway surface along the corridor in preparation for re-paving. We’ll provide more detail in the next few weeks, but this work is currently scheduled to occur at night and last about five nights. The milling is currently expected to start at the north end and work south. Re-paving of the corridor is tentatively scheduled for the week of July 27.

WORK CURRENTLY UNDERWAY:

As of Tuesday, June 23, crews were working on – or have completed – the following:

  • Installation of pedestrian and traffic signals (and control boxes) at the Bucknam Road intersection
  • Continued installation of trees
  • Road sign installation (take a close look at the sign posts – there’s a decorative element at the top of them)
  • Installation of decorative shrouds around the bases of street lights
  • Continued grading and cleanup work
  • Pulling of wires for traffic and pedestrian signal lighting

WORK YOU’RE LIKELY TO SEE THROUGH THE END OF THIS WEEK:

  • On Wednesday, Sargent Corp. will be removing a de-watering pipeline that runs approximately between Wendy’s and Pratt-Abbott cleaners. This pipeline is only buried about two feet below the road surface, but it does stretch across Route One, necessitating a significant road opening. As with previews cross-road trenching work, crews will work in sections and will maintain two-way traffic by means of flaggers and Falmouth Police.  This work will start at approximately 7:00 a.m. and continue for most of the day.
  • Also on Wednesday, a paving crew will be on site, re-paving the aforementioned trench as the work continues. The paving crew will also pave other trench areas along the corridor, including those crossing some driveways.
  • Crews from Moulison North expect to begin attaching pedestrian crossing signals to certain street lighting poles on Wednesday, continuing into later this week.
  • Moulison North expects to begin installing the vertical poles for the new traffic signals on Thursday and Friday.
  • The next shipment of trees is due to arrive on Thursday; we expect installation to begin on Friday.
  • You’re likely to see a considerable amount of work on the sidewalks later this week, as crews install “Quazite Boxes” (these are junction boxes for street and pedestrian lighting) on both sides of Route One.

WORK YOU’RE LIKELY TO SEE EARLY NEXT WEEK:

  • You can expect to see continuation of all of the above.
  • There’s a significant project slated to begin on Tuesday next: the installation of “mast arms” for the new traffic signals. Mast arms are attached to the vertical poles, and support traffic signals (and some signage) over the roadway. This is a significant project; traffic will be controlled during this installation by both flaggers and the Falmouth Police Department.

PHOTOGRAPHS:

This utility pole at the corner of Route One and Depot Road might just be the most unsightly array of wires and cables along Route One. In as few as three weeks, the wires will be gone – and the pole will go away shortly thereafter.

Here’s one of the new street lights, with its decorative base shroud installed.

This is the Bucknam Road intersection. You can see that new traffic and pedestrian signals have been installed.
