Route 1 Project - Weekly Update (8-5-14)

FALMOUTH ROUTE ONE INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT

Construction Update #14, August 5, 2014

The following information reflects what you’re likely to see on Route One in Falmouth in the upcoming seven days. Please note that this is a projection based on the best available information at the time that it was sent and is subject to change due to weather and other variables.

WORK HOURS:

For the next seven days, crews are expected to work day shifts only, Monday through Friday. You may expect to see activity from approximately 6:00 a.m. to approximately 5:00 p.m.

For planning purposes, please note: night work is expected to resume on or about August 24, continuing for three weeks. See below for details.

GENERAL OVERVIEW:

The weather during the past week was better than previous weeks. Crews from both Sargent Corp. and Moulison North are making up the lost time.

The upcoming seven days will be focused primarily on utility duct bank installation, stormwater drainage projects, and several manhole installation projects. Crews are installing up to 200 feet of duct bank each day.

WORK CURRENTLY UNDERWAY:

As of Tuesday, August 5, work is occurring in various locations, including:

  • Stormwater structure installation in front of Allen, Sterling and Lothrop’s Garden Center;
  • Electrical manhole installation adjacent to the Irving gas station/convenience store on the corner of Route One and Bucknam Road;
  • Continuation of the primary duct bank; and
  • Various drainage improvement projects

WORK YOU’RE LIKELY TO SEE IN THE UPCOMING SEVEN DAYS:

  • Continuing installation of the primary duct bank. The installation is approaching the main entrance to The Shops at Falmouth Village (this is the plaza that includes a number of businesses including Hallmark, Petquarters, Ricetta’s and Staples). The main entrance to this plaza has two lanes on each side of the center island. One side of the main entrance will be closed to traffic during construction.  Flaggers will be on site to direct access and egress to the property and Route One. Additional access and egress points are available to/from Depot Road near Ricetta’s, and another exit is located near Olympia Sports.
  • Sidewalk crews will resume preparatory work for paving on the west side of Route One on Wednesday. This work will involve grading and the placement of gravel sub-base.  The target is to complete pavement preparation from Morong’s Service Center to Clearwater Drive by Friday.
  • Crews will move to the east side of Route One and begin the preparation to install a sidewalk.  This work will start at F.O. Bailey and continue north to Clearwater Drive. Once gravel is in place, Moulison North will install power supply conduit and bases for pedestrian and street lighting.  Base layer paving for the sidewalks on both sides is currently planned for August 14 and 15.  In some locations, there will be temporary gaps in pavement to facilitate the installation of utility service conduits to individual businesses.
  • On Thursday, we expect the installation of one electrical manhole and, possibly, a telephone manhole at the corner of Route One (west side) and Depot Road (south side). This work will likely intrude into the turning lane from Depot to Route One. Flaggers will be on site to assist with traffic flow.
  • Work will continue on the stormwater drainage systems in several areas. In addition to other locations, there may be work near Pratt Abbott Cleaners on the corner of Depot Road and/or Norway Savings Bank, just north of Bucknam Road.

NIGHT WORK SCHEDULED TO BEGIN 8/24:

We’re still more than two weeks away from the scheduled re-start of night work, so please be advised that dates and projects may change in response to weather and other variables.

Anticipated overnight work is expected to last approximately three weeks. Projects scheduled in that time include duct bank and stormwater crossings on Clearwater, Depot and Bucknam Roads. There will also be work on Fundy Road as it approaches the east side of Route One, along with several major utility crossings from the duct bank to service businesses on the east side of Route One.

During this period, one-way traffic will be required, with flaggers on site to assist with traffic flow.

If night work is successful during the three week period beginning on August 24, we expect that no additional night work will be required this construction season.

PHOTOGRAPHS:

This shot was taken last Wednesday and shows an electrical manhole installation. Note that the conduits for power run through the manhole and conduits for other utilities (telecommunications) run outside of it. These conduits will enter utility-specific manholes in other locations. The conduits are encased in concrete, then backfilled with soil.

This view from August 5 shows the duct bank installation as it heads north. The photo was shot across the street from Bath Savings. A utilities manhole with emerging conduits can be seen in the foreground. Electrical conduits are shown on the right side, running up to an electrical structure. Just beyond this area, an excavator is cutting the trench for an extension. Up to 200’ of installation per day is possible.

This view is from near the same location as the previous image, looking toward the south. This is the intersection of Depot Road and Route One.  Imagine this vantage point when all those poles and wires are gone!
