Route 1 Project - Weekly Update (9-9-14)

FALMOUTH ROUTE ONE INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT

Construction Update #20, September 9, 2014

The following information reflects what you’re likely to see on Route One in Falmouth in the upcoming seven days. Please note that this is a projection based on the best available information at the time that it was sent and is subject to change due to weather and other variables.

WORK HOURS:

Work in the Route One Infrastructure Project zone for the remainder of this week will occur mostly at night, beginning at approximately 6:00 p.m. and lasting until approximately 6:00 a.m.

The primary exception is paving operations, which are scheduled to begin at approximately 4:00 p.m. this afternoon (Tuesday) and on Thursday, weather permitting. Please see below for details.

Shaw Brothers and Cianbro, who are installing the Summit Natural Gas line, are currently working outside of the boundaries of the Infrastructure Project zone. Although there is still some installation work remaining south of Depot Road, we do not currently anticipate any gas main activity inside the zone for the remainder of this week.

This is the final scheduled week of night work. We expect daytime operations to resume next Monday, with work hours running from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

GENERAL OVERVIEW:

According to construction management personnel, major project components are on schedule. With a handful of exceptions expected to be completed this week (notably at Clearwater Drive), the primary duct bank is now continuous all the way from the vicinity of Waldo’s up to the Foreside Tavern.

Major drainage work continues as well. There is one remaining crossing of Route One for electrical service, at the north end of the project zone (in the vicinity of the Irving gas station and car wash). Weather permitting, that crossing will occur this week, likely on Thursday evening.

We invite you to consider how much you’re seeing right now – and how much you WON’T see in the future. An amazing amount of infrastructure is being moved underground including: electrical service, phone and data services, and natural gas. Construction related to storm-water and some wastewater collection lines are part of the overall project which will significantly improve the reliability of the systems.

With forthcoming underground installation of these services to businesses along the corridor and subsequent landscaping, Route One will be far more visually appealing and safer for drivers and pedestrians.

We fully recognize that the project has required patience and forbearance from business owners along the corridor, and we sincerely thank you for both. We’d also like to thank Sargent Corporation, Moulison North and other contractors who have worked so hard to keep disruptions to a minimum.

WORK CURRENTLY UNDERWAY:

As of Tuesday morning, September 9, night operations have resulted in:

  • A complex crossing or Route One at Depot Road;
  • Installation of the primary duct bank across Bucknam Road to its northern terminus, near Norway Savings Bank/Foreside Tavern;
  • Setting of an electrical structure in the Clearwater Drive/Route One intersection
  • Prepping of driveways and road crossings for paving;
  • Installation of a major storm-water runoff pipe running across the entrances to McDonald’s and the Five County Credit Union.

WORK YOU’RE LIKELY TO SEE IN THE UPCOMING SEVEN DAYS:

  • Tuesday evening, a second structure will be set by Moulison North at Clearwater Drive. Once installed, the main duct bank will be installed across Clearwater (parallel to Route One) and a duct bank extension will be run up Clearwater. This duct bank work may extend into Wednesday evening.
  • Tuesday evening, paving operations will resume. Paving operations this week will focus on road crossings and certain driveway entrances. Tonight, we expect to see paving work closing up open areas at the Bucknam Road intersection. We also expect to see some driveway areas paved, including at Falmouth Physical Therapy and TD Banknorth. The north entrance to Waldo’s may be prepped for paving (with paving on Thursday).
  • Tuesday night, we expect the drainage run to continue south, crossing the entrance to Dunkin Donuts and Subway. We also expect to see installation of a major drainage structure between Ace Hardware and Supercuts.
  • Wednesday evening, we expect completion of any of the above that weren’t finished, plus a second drainage structure in the vicinity of Ace Hardware and Supercuts.
  • Wednesday evening, crews are scheduled to prep the driveway entrance for Dunkin Donuts/Subway for paving.
  • Thursday night, we expect Moulison North to perform the final Route One crossing. This is at the northern end of the project, in the vicinity of the Irving station/car wash.
  • Thursday evening, a structure will be installed at the southwest corner of the Route One/Bucknam Road intersection. The large excavation in that area will then be backfilled.
  • Weather permitting, paving operations will resume on Thursday evening, again focusing on driveways and crossings.
  • Next week, crews will resume daytime operations. Moulison North will focus primarily on installing underground service line conduits to individual businesses along the corridor. Sargent Corporation will focus on cleanup along the work zone and sidewalk preparation. Sidewalk prep on the west side will involve grading in anticipation of pavement; sidewalk work on the east side will involve removing topsoil and laying down a gravel base in anticipation of pavement.
  • The first approximately 200’ of Clearwater Drive (measured from the curb at Route One) will be completely repaved early next week.

PHOTOGRAPHS:

For the past several weeks, work has occurred primarily at night – adding challenge to the work crews, but greatly reducing the impact on traffic and business access. In this shot from Monday evening, we see a crew from Moulison North – aided by a project supervisor from FST (the engineering firm) – prepping for the installation of a large electrical structure on Clearwater Drive.

On Tuesday afternoon, the structure was in place (with one more to go). This view looks east towards Route One from Clearwater Drive, in the vicinity of 220 Route One and the Clearwater entrance to Wal-Mart. Yes, you see a lot of open surface – opened to permit installation of electrical and data utilities, plus an all-important sewage main upgrade. This entire area will be re-paved early next week.
