Introduction of amendments to the Code of Ordinances, Chapter 8, regarding temporary signs.

A public comment period will not be included with this item.

ACTION: Schedule public hearing.

Description

The Community Development Committee was charged by the Council as part of the 2017/2018 work plan to prepare amendments to temporary sign provisions to bring them into compliance with the US Supreme Court ruling of June 2015, Reed V. Gilbert.  The amendments that were a result of that work were introduced by the CDC at the 5/14/18 Council meeting.

The proposed amendments received a public hearing at the 7/9/18 Council meeting.  At that meeting, based in part on feedback received on the proposed amendment, there was a desire on the part of some councilors to revise the proposed amendment to make a limited accommodation for temporary signage to be located within the portion of the public right of way that lies between the sidewalk and the travel way.  Accordingly, Section 8-363.2.b of the proposed ordinance has now been revised to allow a temporary sign to be placed in these locations but in a limited manner for only one day per week.

Attachments include a letter of introduction and the revised amendment language.
